OUR physcial education CURRICULUM

What is physical education?

Physical Education focuses on developing students’ physical fitness, motor skills, teamwork, and knowledge about health and well-being. It’s not just about playing sports, it is about learning how to move confidently and competently in a variety of physical activities.

Physical education at orion eden park

At Orion Eden Park, it is our belief that Physical Education is a vital ingredient in supporting our students physical, emotional, and social wellbeing. The purpose of our PE curriculum and enrichment programme is to provide students with high quality teaching and learning, which allows students to master specialist knowledge and gain an understanding of character development which inspires them to engage in a lifelong love of leading active and healthy lifestyles.

Students at Orion Eden Park will be exposed to a wide variety of sporting activities, enabling all students to find an area to flourish. They will develop transferable skills across the activities which will aid our students in high performance. We believe it is important to use sport as a tool to raise self-esteem and build resilience in each individual, leading to students being inspired, engaged and enthusiastic about the subject and academics as a whole.

Physical education at ks3

At KS3 students are taught in mixed gender classes with all students learning the fundamental skills and techniques which underpin high sports performance across a range of sporting contexts. Both within lessons and through the extensive enrichment programme students will have the opportunity to develop in invasion and net/wall games, dance, athletics, gymnastics and health related exercise where students have access to our fully equipped gym which has a range of cardiovascular and weight machines. Alongside developing technical proficiency, we aim to develop students' creativity, awareness, resilience, decision making and self-organisation.

Physical education at ks4

CORE PE

All students in England are required to take core Physical Education (PE) at Key Stage 4 (Years 10 and 11), even though it is not a graded GCSE subject. There are important reasons for this;

- Promoting health and wellbeing and developing lifelong habits

- Social and emotional development building teamwork, communication and leadership skills

- Combating sedentary lifestyles; with increasing screen time PE ensures students stay active during the school week

GCSE PE

At KS4 students get the opportunity to extend themselves at a deeper level which enables them to demonstrate a greater depth of knowledge. At Orion Eden Park we strive to allow all students to reach their full potential and therefore we offer two examination courses which provide suitable routes for all students. Whether students wish to undertake a performance-based GCSE route or a more vocational CNAT route, both courses are filled with opportunities for students to develop their appreciation for PE while growing specialist understanding.

CNAT PE

The CNAT PE course at Key Stage 4 refers to the OCR Cambridge National in Sport Studies. It is an alternative to GCSE PE and is designed to be more vocational and practical, focusing on real-world applications of sport and physical education.  Students will study practical performance as well as developing a theoretical understanding. They will complete modular based assignment and controlled assessments with less emphasis on final examinations.

Health & Social Care

what is health & Social care?

Health and Social Care is about supporting people’s well-being; physically, emotionally, and socially. It’s a field that combines healthcare (like looking after people with illnesses or disabilities) and social care (helping people live independently and with dignity).

health & Social care at orion eden park

The BTEC Tech Award in Health & Social Care blends academic knowledge with hands-on practice, giving students a strong foundation in the sector. It enhances both vocational understanding and essential life skills, preparing learners well for their next educational steps or entry-level careers in care. It’s a vocational course, equivalent to one GCSE, that introduces students to the knowledge, skills, and values needed in health and social care professions - such as nursing, social work, and care support roles.

Learners engage with three broad components:

  1. Human Lifespan Development which covers stages from birth to later life, exploring physical, intellectual, emotional, and social development, and key life events.
  2. Health & Social Care Services and Values that examines different care services, ethical care values, and the skills and attitudes required for professional practice.
  3. Health & Wellbeing which explores factors impacting well‑being, from physiological and lifestyle to environmental influences, and develops person‑centred improvement plans

How is it assessed?

  • Two components are assessed through coursework (internally by teachers).
  • One component is assessed by an external exam.

Head, Heart & Hands Assessment

In core PE lessons we assess students through using the Head, Heart and Hands assessment model.

  • Head- Having the knowledge and understanding to improve performance
  • Heart- Developing life skills to achieve
  • Hands- Implementing physical skills to be successful.

Students are assessed through sets of success criteria relating to these skills which can be seen HERE

  • Tracksuit bottoms (optional)
